This video from YouTube shows a shared space scheme implemented in Poynton, Cheshire. Visually and environmentally the transformation is incredible. Having shared the video in the Devizes Futures and Cycle Devizes groups on Facebook I began to think about how this approach might be adopted in Devizes.
I’ve always felt that the key to traffic flows in Devizes is the complex series of road junctions and roundabouts around the Green. The congestion here has a knock on effect across the town but also makes the same open area much less attractive than it should be. Even on sunny warm days, the numbers of people on the Green are much fewer than you might have expected. Reducing the impact of traffic on the roads surrounding it would obviously benefit the Green proper, but would also go a long way to improve conditions in the town centre.
It’s too early to say how this might be done, but from the evidence of Poynton, it is clearly possible to make significant improvements.
